Closed Adoption

In the past, closed adoptions were sometimes the only option for birthmothers seeking an adoptive family. In closed adoptions, the agency or attorney involved will provide complete confidentiality between the birth mother and the adoptive family. This means that the adoptive family and child won’t know the identity of the mother and she won’t know the identity, location, or makeup of the adoptive family. All communication between the parties occurs through the agency or attorney. Sometimes, birth mothers seek this option because they find it easier to move forward after placement with a definitive boundary in place. Closed adoption gives this option.

Open Adoption

Increasingly popular, open adoptions are characterized by the degree of information shared. Often in open adoptions, birth mothers are able to select the family they’d like their child to be placed with. From this point, birth mothers and the adoptive parents can work together to determine what amount of contact best suits the situation. This can range from giving the child an awareness of their mother’s identity and full name to direct contact through texting and even in-person visits.

While you may have to watch for boundary issues, unrealistic expectations, and varying values, open adoptions provide an excellent opportunity for everyone involved. Open adoptions give the adoptive family important medical information, a link to heritage and ancestry, and maybe most importantly, answers to an adoptee’s questions. Birth mothers may also find open adoptions ease their grieving process and provide peace of mind as they’re able to know about their child as he or she grows up.

Semi Open Adoption

Semi-open adoption provides a third option existing somewhere in-between the concepts of closed and open adoptions. In this type of adoption, some information is shared with both sides while retaining some level of desired privacy for either the birth mother or the adoptive family. Communication often happens through the adoption agency; however, it’s not unusual for a semi-open adoption to progress into an open adoption as trust is built between the parties. Some birthmothers find that semi-open adoptions provide the perfect balance of privacy and being aware of or involved in their child’s life.
